Controls that don't fight your thumbs

Controls that don't fight your thumbs

The fastest way to ruin a mobile game is bad controls, and it happens constantly. Tilt steering on a bus, virtual buttons that drift, tap zones too small for a real thumb — it's death by a thousand mis-inputs.

Neon Dust Rally is my current go-to example of doing it right. Holding either side of the screen steers, the drift has weight, and I never once accidentally swerved because the train lurched. It designed around how people actually hold a phone.

The trick isn't complicated: assume the player has one hand busy, assume they're not looking at the screen with full focus, and build for that. Games that start from those assumptions feel effortless.

When you find controls this good, you stop noticing them, which is the whole point. That's the invisible craft that separates a keeper from a one-session delete.
